The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society Dog Rehabilitation Centre, inside the new Peterborough Animal Care Centre at 1999 Technology Drive, in Peterborough, is nearing completion!
The Centre is continuing to take shape with outdoor landscaping beginning, final coats of wall and epoxy floor paint being applied, as well as ceiling tile finishing, and finalizing utility hookups. Finishing’s will be completed over the next couple weeks, with an expected interior completion of mid to late November. Exterior construction will continue into the new year, but the centre is expected to have a soft opening in January 2023. A grand opening is being planned for Spring 2023!
Unique features support individualized dog care
The Dog Rehabilitation Centre will be one of the first facilities of its kind in Canada, and one of only a handful in North America. It is being custom built to help dogs who need more support and individualized care than an animal centre can provide.
The Provincial Dog Rehabilitation Centre will contain a number of unique features, including:
- Aquatherapy, including an underwater treadmill.
- A real family living room to help dogs practice living in a home environment. For some dogs, the Arlo Gattuso-Slaight Dog Living Room may be their first opportunity to experience the comforts of a home and this will help get them ready for adoption.
- Flexible training rooms that can be adapted to help overcome situational problems such as resource guarding or fear of certain noises.
- Indoor and outdoor off-leash areas
- Specialized training courses
- Staffed by experts with training in dog behaviour who can put the latest evidence-based dog behavioural research into practice
- All rehabilitation areas have been designed to be viewable to the public – we want you to see first-hand the life-saving difference you make possible with your support!
